You know what’s missing from your camera roll?
YOU.

If you’re like most mums I meet through my mum and kids photography Hawke’s Bay sessions, your camera roll is filled with adorable snapshots of your little ones—but there’s hardly any proof that you were there too.

But here’s the good news: getting in more photos with your kids doesn’t have to be awkward or staged. You don’t need to wait until you’ve done your hair, cleaned the house, or found a matching outfit. And you certainly don’t have to rely on chaotic toddler selfies.

Whether you’re in Napier, Havelock North or somewhere in between, here are 6 natural, creative ways to get in the frame and tell your side of the story.

Tip #1: Set Up a Timer & Play

Forget perfect poses—capture the real moments.

How:

  • Set your phone or camera on a chair, shelf, or tripod.
  • Use a 10-second timer or burst mode.
  • Start playing! Tickle fights, piggyback rides, messy cuddles—all of it counts.

These unfiltered images show your kids what they’ll remember most: a present, playful mum who adores them.

Tip #2: Use a Tripod

You don’t need a special occasion. Real life is the occasion.

Try this:

  • Set up in your kitchen, playroom, or bedroom.
  • Use a remote shutter or video mode.
  • Record everyday moments like storytime, baking, or Lego building.

Over time, you’ll build a collection of memories that reflect your real, wonderful, beautifully messy life.

Tip #3: Capture Your Reflections

This one is so easy, and so powerful.

How:

  • Spot reflections in mirrors, windows, puddles, even the oven door.
  • Snap quick moments—brushing teeth, playing dress-up, or walking hand in hand.

These fleeting glances make artistic, emotion-filled photos you’ll treasure.

Tip #4: Hire a Photographer for a Day in the Life Session

Some of the most meaningful images are captured when you’re not trying to take them.

That’s why I offer documentary-style family photography in Hawke’s Bay. We don’t pose awkwardly for what feels like forever. We play. We cuddle. And I quietly capture the magic.

You can explore my relaxed, storytelling-style sessions here or get in touch for session options.

Hiring a photographer takes the pressure off you—and ensures you are part of your family’s visual legacy.
