If you’re planning an outdoor session and wondering what happens if it rains on a photoshoot day, you’re not alone. As a Hawke’s Bay photographer, this is one of the most common concerns I hear from clients. Rain doesn’t have to ruin your session—in fact, it can create unique, romantic, and incredibly atmospheric photos.

What Happens If It Rains on a Photoshoot Day?

Rain on shoot day may feel like a setback, but it’s often just a change in direction. Whether you’re planning an engagement shoot, family photos, or a maternity session, a sprinkle of rain can actually enhance your photos in unexpected ways.

Here’s what typically happens if it rains on your photoshoot day:

  • Rescheduling is always an option. If you’re not comfortable shooting in the rain, I’m happy to reschedule at no extra cost. Flexibility is key—especially here in the Hawke’s Bay, where the weather can turn quickly.
  • Embracing the rain can be magical. Think umbrellas, cozy moments, and misty backdrops. Some of my favorite photos as a Hawke’s Bay photographer were taken in light rain.
  • Backup indoor locations. I have a beautiful greenhouse that we can use in Hastings which is fantastic to use for sessions we can’t move!

Rainy Day Tips from a Hawke’s Bay Photographer

If you’re open to shooting in the rain, here’s how to make it work:

  • Bring clear umbrellas – They let in light while keeping you dry.
  • Wear shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. You can always switch into heels or dress shoes just for the shots.
  • Plan for touch-ups – Keep a small towel and makeup essentials handy.
  • Think moody and cinematic. A rain-soaked vineyard or stormy beach can create dramatic, magazine-worthy images.

Flexibility and Creativity: The Photographer’s Mindset

As a seasoned Hawke’s Bay photographer, I’ve learned that adaptability leads to the best images. Rainy shoots often result in candid, authentic moments—there’s something freeing about dancing in the drizzle or snuggling under a shared coat.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Let the Weather Steal Your Joy

The next time you’re worried about what happens if it rains on a photoshoot day, remember that with the right mindset and photographer, the session can still be incredible. Whether we reschedule or lean into the moody vibes, I’ll make sure your memories are beautifully captured.
